Bursaries

Bursaries

The RFS offers a number of bursaries and awards both locally and nationally.

  • The Randle Travel Fund offers bursaries to enable forestry people of all ages to travel independently to enhance their forestry knowledge.
  • The Spencer Bursary covers all the costs of forestry undergraduates, post-graduates, or recent graduates, attending our annual conference.
  • The Yorkshire Bursary. In conjunction with the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, our Yorkshire Division offers an annual bursary worth £600 to allow a younger person to carry out a forestry related project.

Randle Travel Fund

Through the generosity of the Trustees of the Donald Randle Trust, the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) is able to offer bursaries each year under the following conditions:

a) funds are provided to individual members of the RFS to cover part or all of their subsistence and travel costs when taking part in: RFS Overseas Study Tours organised by its Head Office, or; those run by local divisions and approved by Head Office, or; for individual trips abroad specifically designed to enhance their forestry knowledge.

b) the RTF bursaries exclude group expeditions or participation in tours or courses organised by other bodies or commercial enterprises.

c) successful candidates will need to submit a comprehensive written report to the Society within three months of their return and/or an article of not less than 300 words for consideration for publication in the Quarterly Journal of Forestry.

The only requirement for eligibility is that candidates must either be current members of the RFS, or work full-time for an RFS corporate member or enclose a completed membership application with the appropriate payment. There are no age restrictions.

Spencer Bursary

This Bursary underwrites the cost of at least five students attending the annual RFS/RASE/FC Symposium.

The next RFS symposium – in association with the RASE – is on Wednesday 21 April 2010; at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. The topic is ‘Tree Diseases’ – especially those threatening native oaks and horse chestnuts.

Further details of this Bursary are provided in the downloadable documents, below.

Yorkshire Bursary

The annual Yorkshire Bursary is offered jointly by the Yorkshire Division of the RFS and the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. It is worth £600 and is intended to allow a younger person to carry out a forestry related project at home or abroad.

Past winners have delved into a vast range of different themes both in the UK and overseas. Some recipients have been students, some recent graduates and others younger people working in forestry. It is restricted to those who were born, bred, reside or study in Yorkshire, Humber, Durham or Northumberland. Some weight is given when choosing the winner as to any other local connections which the individual or the project may have. Contact the Yorkshire RFS Secretary for details.
