RFS Certificate in Arboriculture
For over 40 years the Royal Forestry Society’s Certificate in Arboriculture has set the standard for craftsman-level arborists.
The Certificate is widely recognised within the arboricultural industry as proof that the holder has both a good theoretical knowledge of arboriculture and is proficient in the practical skills needed to succeed.
The theoretical and the practical components of the Certificate are studied separately and a number of local and land-based colleges provide training.
To gain the full RFS Certificate you need to study the following:
(a) The ABC Level 2 Certificate in Arboriculture, to prove that your theoretical background is sound.
(b) Hold a suite of “NPTC” validated competence tests or “tickets” selected from the list below. Some are compulsory to meet health and safety requirements and all are best practice.
Details of the ABC theory certificate can be found at www.abcawards.co.uk.
Click the link at the foot of this page to download the list of NPTC tests. The NPTC is now called City & Guilds Land Based Services but its website is still www.nptc.org.uk.
Once you have passed all components of (a) and (b) you may send photocopies of the certificates to the RFS at: 102 High Street, Tring, Herts HP23 4AF.
The RFS will verify all paperwork and issue the full RFS Certificate in Arboriculture.
There is no charge. The RFS is happy to do this as part of our ongoing brief of promoting good sustainable tree management.
The RFS will then publish the names and home towns (but not the full address or any other details) of successful holders of the RFS Cert Arb periodically in our own Quarterly Journal of Forestry and issue press releases to the arboricultural and forestry media.
Holders of the Certificate may also use the abbreviation Cert Arb RFS after their name.
For more about ABC Awards, visit www.abcawards.co.uk. They also offer the Technicians Certificate in Arboriculture and the Diploma in Arboriculture.
