RFS members come from all backgrounds, and include students and professionals, keen amateurs, official bodies, and voluntary and community organisations - but all with a common interest in trees.

With such a diverse membership, the RFS is different things to different people. As a member, you can:

  • Attend local woodland meetings throughout the country both in and outdoors - many of the visits are to parks, arboreta, woodlands and forests not open to the public; there are over 100 nationwide each year
  • Receive our well respected Quarterly Journal of Forestry containing articles on all aspects of trees and woods - it enjoys a world-wide circulation with subscribers from 25 different countries
  • Go on our annual study tour in Britain or one of our regular visits overseas
  • Use our specialist library and slide collection
  • Support and participate in our woodland excellence and education competitions
  • Through our Tree Aid project, sponsor community woodlands in Africa

  • Be a co-owner in probably the largest redwood grove in Europe, located near Welshpool in mid-Wales
  • Visit our Hockeridge & Pancake Woods in the Chilterns - a "Centre of Excellence" - to show how modern silvicultural practice can produce timber and be compatible with conservation and recreation
  • Help create a 48ha Millennium Woodland at Battram in Leicestershire in the New National Forest
  • Add your voice when the RFS is consulted on environmental matters by the authorities or policy-making bodies
  • Support RFS services for younger people, such as our advice on forestry careers, bursaries to young foresters to attend RFS events and for independent travel, and prizes to forestry students at local colleges
  • Use Tree Terms, our online layman's glossary to forestry jargon
  • Access Grants for Tr££s, our online compendium that explains over 50 schemes funding tree planting and care;
  • Receive our fortnightly RFS E-news for members
  • Enjoy a complementary copy of the popular Tree News magazine twice a year.

But RFS membership is not just about personal gain.

Your annual subscription helps us to provide free information to the many people with a passing interest in trees who visit our website, our woods, contact us for information or sit our not-for-profit exams - all adding up to a more enlightened understanding of the vital role of trees.
