RFS to award over £10,000 to aid forestry study

A new £2,000 Viking Bursary and up to four funded Studentships of £1,850 each are being launched by the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) under its flagship Future Foresters programme for 2016.

Both are open to full and part time students enrolled in forestry or allied courses.

In addition, the Randle Travel Bursary is once again offered to RFS Members of any age involved in independent study abroad. Up to four £300 Randle Travel bursaries being offered.

Carter launches the Viking Bursary

The Viking Bursary will award £2,000 annually for independent self-directed study or research that benefits the practical management and resilience of woodlands, including a contribution towards travel expenses. Priority will be given to projects focused on England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

RFS Yorkshire Division Chairman, David Carter, commented: "This bursary has been made possible thanks to a generous bequest from Mrs Sheila Jorgensen, a former RFS Yorkshire Division member.

" At a time when the forestry sector is faced with a skills shortage, it supports the RFS Future Foresters aim to encourage more talented students at any level to pursue their passion for forestry, share their research with the forestry community and further their careers in the sector."  

RFS Future Foresters Studentships offer six to eight week supervised work experience placements during the summer vacation. 2016 projects on offer include:

  • research and creation of woodland management case studies based on award winning woodlands
  • development of a woodland health survey processes in RFS woodlands
  • design of learning resources for the RFS Teaching Trees programme for primary school, Key Stage 1 and 2
  • survey of one or more Conifers for Colleges research plots to record progress of different species, including several 'novel' conifer species
  • creation of practical woodland management guidance notes

Applications for Future Foresters Studentships should be received by Monday 15 February 2016 and for the Viking Bursary by Monday 29 February 2016.
