Excellence in Forestry 2016 presentations

Amongst many very excellent entries, our Excellence in Forestry Award winners  2016 were outstanding, Royal Forestry Society President Sophie Churchill told all those gathered at Lotherton Hall near Leeds for the presentations.

And, as a learned and learning organisation, she said, it is right that the RFS takes a lead in

Education and Learning Award winners, judge Ted Wilson and sponsor Alun Watkins from PEFC 

identifying and rewarding those who are managing their woods well and sustainably for the future or passing on learning and helping to share best practice.

There were also thanks to Leeds City Council for hosting the awards event and to their Natural Environment Manager, Parks and Countryside, Glenn Gorner and forester James Jesson, for a tour of the grounds and woodlands.

Winners were:

Gold: Helmsley Estate, Duncombe Park, near Helmsley, North Yorkshire, owned by the Rt Hon Jake Barnaby Duncombe.

Silver: Warren and Lalbuss Woods, Ivegil, Cumbria, owned by Orlando Finzi, managed by Egger Forestry.

Highly commended: Grimston Wood, near York, owned by Ralph Hoyle.

Highly commended: 1st Whittingham BP Scout Group, based at the Whittingham Memorial Institute, Alnwick, Northumberland.
