Coronavirus and RFS events

As a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak and current Public Health advice, we have had to cancel the vast majority of our events programme in 2020. A few events are now able to go ahead, although these are subject to local and national restrictions and may change subject to any updated advice as we do not wish to put our members, volunteers and supporters at any risk during this very difficult period.

Below is a summary of the current status of our events programme:

  • A number of Divisions plan to resume woodland meetings in September and October.   As you will understand, numbers will need to be limited, social distancing observed and many standard practices such as car-sharing, and handing out of name badges (among others) will not be possible.   It is also imperative that members register to attend beforehand and do not arrive unannounced on the day.  Each Division is implementing tailored COVID-19 risk mitigation measures for their individual meetings, and you will also find some summary guidelines on the RFS website here.  Your Division will let you know which if any meetings are going ahead or you can click here to find the status of your local listings. Where meetings have been cancelled it is mainly due to site-specific issues that make a visit impractical in the current circumstances, and not for want of trying.

  • RFS one day training courses have largely been postponed to 2021 (dates TBC) and ticket holders refunded.  We are hopeful that we may be able to run the Woodland Archaeology course on 02 October .  We have delivered a small number of courses online and hope to be able to announce more soon.  Updates on online courses can be found here.

  • The NDG James Memorial Lecture 2020 will be taking place as an online webinar on Tuesday 29 September.  For the first time ever it will be completely free of charge to all current RFS members.  Book your tickets now to avoid disappointment!
  • The Whole Society Meeting, hosted by the North West Midlands Division in Shropshire and Staffordshire, has been postponed to Monday 10 to Friday 14 May 2021 and ticket holders have been refunded.  Our hosts have all very generously offered to host us next year instead so as far as possible the itinerary listed here will remain unchanged.
  • Shortlisting for the Excellence in Forestry Awards in Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man has taken place, but the judging and awards ceremony will be postponed to July 2021.
  • The Treescapes2020 conference 1-2 July has been rescheduled for 30 June-1 July 2021.
  • Teaching Trees visits are suspended until schools return to normal, which is not expected before September.
  • The Overseas Study Tour to Finland (30 Aug to 10 Sept) has now been postponed to 2021.  Ticket holders have been contacted and we hope that the tour will go ahead from 29 August to 09 September 2021.  We will announce the new dates as soon as possible, following further discussions with our Finnish tour operator.

At the beginning of August we began a phased return to RFS HQ on a rota basis, following strict social distancing measures.  We will do our utmost to ensure that the office will be staffed between 9.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.  There will be odd occasions when this will not be possible, but we will respond to voicemail messages as soon as possible.  If you'd like to reach a specifc member of the team you can reach us via email - details can be found here.
